Company Overview: Voice Up is a digital media and social impact organization committed to mobilizing young people to drive meaningful change through storytelling, social media, and creative expression. By blending data with the arts, Voice Up aims to highlight critical social justice issues and inspire action. Our projects bring data to life through innovative combinations of visual art, music, dance, and interactive storytelling, making complex social issues relatable and impactful.

 

Position Overview: The Program Director for Data and Storytelling will lead Voice Up’s efforts to present data behind social justice issues in engaging, accessible formats. This role requires a visionary leader who understands how to convey complex data in ways that resonate emotionally, using creative arts, music, and dance as tools for storytelling. The ideal candidate will have experience in data visualization, project management, and a passion for social justice. They will collaborate with artists, musicians, dancers, and data analysts to create immersive, impactful stories that bring social issues to life.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

1. Creative Data Storytelling:

  • Develop and execute storytelling projects that combine data visualization with creative mediums such as visual art, music, and dance to communicate social justice issues.

  • Work closely with data analysts to extract compelling insights, using these findings to design fact-driven and emotionally impactful stories.

  • Collaborate with artists, musicians, and dancers to create multimedia presentations, performances, and interactive exhibits that transform data into engaging narratives.
     

2. Project Management & Strategy:

  • Lead the planning and execution of data-driven storytelling projects from conception to completion, overseeing timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.

  • Set strategic goals for each project, ensuring alignment with VoiceUp’s mission to raise awareness and inspire action around social justice issues.

  • Coordinate with the communications and marketing teams to amplify project reach and engagement across digital and social media channels.


3. Collaborative Partnerships with Creatives:

  • Build relationships with visual artists, musicians, choreographers, and other creative professionals to produce collaborative works that bring data to life.

  • Organize creative workshops, brainstorming sessions, and storyboarding meetings with collaborators to ensure alignment on project vision and storytelling approach.

  • Work with content creators to produce supplementary material, including behind-the-scenes stories, artist interviews, and educational content about the data.


4. Data Visualization & Innovation:

  • Leverage innovative data visualization tools and techniques to create compelling, user-friendly graphics, infographics, and interactive experiences.

  • Explore emerging technologies, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and interactive web design, to enhance the storytelling experience.

  • Stay informed about the latest trends in data visualization, storytelling, and multimedia design to elevate project quality and impact continually.
     

5. Community Engagement & Impact Measurement:

  • Engage with Voice Up’s audience to gather feedback and assess the impact of storytelling projects, using insights to refine future initiatives.

  • Organize events and virtual gatherings to showcase completed projects and foster conversations around the data, art, and social justice issues presented.

  • Develop evaluation methods to track engagement metrics, audience feedback, and the real-world impact of storytelling initiatives.

 

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a higher learning institution, including two-year or four-year colleges, universities, or trade schools.

  • Or recent alumni with very strong on-campus real-time connections.

  • Or a bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Digital Media, Art & Design, Communications, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of experience in data visualization, storytelling, or multimedia project management, preferably with a focus on social impact or social justice.

  • Strong understanding of data analysis and experience working with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, D3.js).

  • Experience in working with or managing creative teams, including artists, musicians, and performers, with a collaborative and mission-driven approach.

  • Proficiency in multimedia production and a track record of creating engaging visual, audio, or performance-based storytelling projects.

  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.

  • Passion for social justice and a commitment to using creative storytelling as a tool for positive change.


 

Compensation: Compensation will be determined based on the startup’s structure and resources, with the potential for an equity stake or deferred payment arrangement in the initial stages.
