About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and empathetic College Access Intern to support first-generation college students during their crucial first and second years of university education. This dynamic role combines first-gen student support with community engagement, working directly with a cohort of 20 emerging college student leaders who are implementing social impact projects in their home communities. Through this dual focus, the intern will help first-generation students maintain meaningful connections to their home communities while navigating their college journey.
Primary Responsibilities
Student Support & Community Impact
- Collaborate with and support a cohort of 20 emerging college student leaders implementing social impact projects
- Guide first-generation students in developing their own community engagement initiatives
- Create bridges between campus resources and community needs
- Document and showcase successful community impact projects as models for other first-gen students
- Facilitate discussions about maintaining hometown connections while pursuing higher education
Peer Support & Mental Health
- Facilitate virtual peer support groups for first-generation college students
- Coordinate with university mental health services to connect students with appropriate resources
- Develop programming that addresses the unique challenges of balancing community commitments with academic success
- Track student engagement and program outcomes
Program Development
- Design workshops connecting academic success to community leadership
- Create and maintain a digital resource library showcasing community impact success stories
- Organize virtual networking events between current students and community leaders
- Support the documentation and evaluation of student-led community projects
Required Qualifications
- Current undergraduate junior/senior or graduate student
- Strong understanding of first-generation student experiences and challenges
- Experience with community engagement or service learning projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency with digital collaboration tools and social media platforms
Preferred Qualifications
- Personal experience as a first-generation college student
- Background in community development, social work, education, or related field
- Previous mentoring or peer support experience
- Experience with project management and program evaluation
- Bilingual skills (any language)
- Understanding of asset-based community development principles
Time Commitment
- 12-15 hours per week
- Minimum one semester commitment
- Flexible scheduling within standard business hours
- Additional hours may be required during community project milestone periods
